Robert Start – Military Veteran, and our own “Pocket Rob”
Robert is a proud 1977 graduate of Nonnewaug High School and served his country in the United States Air Force from May 1978 through January 1987.
Professionally, Robert dedicated 35 years to Norcom CT, building a career centered on service, reliability, and commitment to his community.
He joined the Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department in January 2005. While becoming a firefighter was not initially part of his plans, the Chief, spent nearly ten years encouraging him to get involved with the department. As he likes to say, he had no desire to go into burning buildings, but when the department needed drivers, he answered the call. More than twenty years later, he continues to serve the community with dedication and pride.
Fire service runs deep in Robert’s family. His grandfather, Warren F. Mansfield, his father, Ted Start, brothers Chris Start and Donald Start, and his nephew Frank Start have all been members of the Woodbury Fire Department, continuing a tradition of service that spans generations.
Robert has earned certifications as:
Firefighter I
Firefighter II
Certified Pump Operator
In addition to his fire service, Robert was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America from April 2000 through June 2026, helping guide and mentor countless young people throughout his 26 years of service with the organization.
Today, Robert remains a valued member of the Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department, bringing experience, dedication, and a strong family legacy of service to every call and every training session.
Thank you, Robert for your continued service to the Woodbury community and for carrying on a proud family tradition of volunteerism.
