Yes. All members are volunteers; most members work full-time, in various trades or professions. A few of our members are firefighters employed in other towns, and some members have retired from their careers.
All members must pass a basic physical exam from the WVFD designated physician. The department physical is an annual requirement, funded by the department.
Yes. We have eight officers, including Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, two Captains, two First Lieutenants, and two Second Lieutenants. Officers are elected by the department membership and approved by the Board of Fire Commissioners.
We see various types of structure fires, brush fires, and car fires, automatic alarms, downed power lines and many other situations. We respond to various rescue scenarios from someone trapped in a motor vehicle accident to someone lost in the woods. We respond to pretty much any emergency that is not handled by police or ambulance alone.
No. All required training is managed and funded by the fire department.
The Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department maintains high standards to help ensure the safety and effectiveness of our members. Within 18 months of joining, completion of an NFPA certified Firefighter I course is required. Additional training and certification are required for specialty skills such as Water Rescue, High Angle Rescue and Below Grade Rescue.
Yes, drills are offered on various topics, routinely throughout the year. Last year we offered 46 opportunities to drill. Members must attend at least 12 training drills per year.
The National Fire Protection Association is the industry’s primary nonprofit organization. NFPA establishes standards and provides research, training, outreach, and advocacy. The NFPA mission is to help save lives and reduce loss with information, knowledge, and passion. Many regulations refer to and utilize NFPA Standards.
Members have specific coverage under the town’s insurance policy, including Workers Compensation coverage while actively engaged in firefighting duties.
There is no fixed time requirement. Firefighters are required to respond to 32 Calls and 12 Drills per year and are encouraged to attend the monthly Department and Company meetings. Officers have additional responsibilities. As with most organizations, there is opportunity for more engagement if desired.
The Department meeting is the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 PM. Company meetings are the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 PM. The department provides drill opportunities four times a month – usually a Thursday, Tuesday, Wednesday and one Saturday.
We need both stations to have enough room to house all of our apparatus, which we need to ensure proper coverage for emergencies. In 1927, two independent fire companies merged into Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department. Our two stations provide better ISO coverage, which means better insurance rates for our townspeople. Additionally, a two-company command structure integrates with the NFPA Incident Command System (ICS).
Members are issued a fire department pager that allows you to hear communication between our Dispatch and officer communications from their two-way radios. The pager can be set to hear fire and ambulance, or just fire. SMS texts and a web-based application are also used for incident notification and status of responding personnel.
