Woodbury volunteer firefighters plan the annual controlled burn of Christmas trees and evergreens for Saturday March 21st at 6pm in front of headquarters 25 Quassuk Road near the corner of US Route 6.  Originally scheduled for mid-January, “We’ll now welcome the first full day of Spring instead,” says Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan. She explains, “We’ve been delayed every weekend for two months by snowstorms or high winds and the large number of callouts for fire and rescues.”

Former Woodbury Fire Chief Bud Neal will lead off the annual public bonfire with a housefire safety demo by lighting a single dry evergreen.  It will flare into a hot, dangerous fire at up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit within seconds. Immediately thereafter, firefighters will ignite the pile of 123 trees gathered in the post-Christmas effort that combined Boy Scout fundraising, anti-litter, and fire safety. Each year the event draws a crowd that enjoys refreshments and tours of firetrucks in the department building as the fire dies down.
