The Woodbury Volunteer Fire Dept was the home base for an annual worldwide ham radio event the weekend of June 24 and 25, 2023. Michael Gabriel (photo), a member of the New Milford Town Highway Dept with call sign WA1PW, happily reaches another amateur in Nepal 7,454 miles away via the 20 meter SW band. “We do it for fun around the world,” says organizer Glen Dains, a veteran Woodbury firefighter.” We also treat it as a technical hobby with practical backup for emergency use. It’s great for people who want to experiment with wireless communication on a usable radio spectrum.”
