The Woodbury Volunteer Fire Dept will host a community weekend on May 10th and 11th with a free kids’ fishing derby on Saturday morning and a Mother’s Day pancake breakfast on Sunday morning. “We’re all neighbors and we draw volunteer firefighters from across the town in a wide variety of occupations,” says Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan. “We’re delighted to welcome everybody, and of course all our volunteers are ready for any call-outs”

The Saturday fishing event for kids aged 13 and under is from 8 to 1130a in a pond stocked with rainbow, brown, and brook trout signposted on Railtree Hill Road, off route 317. “We hope to have some tiger trout too,” says organizer Jason Hatstat, a fire lieutenant. “There will be the usual trophies for largest and second-largest fish, the Darlene Start Memorial Sportsmanship award, and for the most motivated angler.” Hatstat also said there will be a draw for prizes such as a new bicycle and fishing gear. A list of participating stores and shops will be posted at the event.

On Sunday, the department on 25 Quassuk Rd off Route 6 will host its 44th annual Mother’s Day pancake breakfast from 7am to 11am cooked by firefighters. There will be a small charge, with lower prices for children and seniors, officers said.  The department canceled the Valentines Day pancake breakfast in February due to icy roads so, adds Fire Lt. Joe Corey, “Everybody is invited to bring sweethearts, especially Moms, to this happy event.” The menu offers stacks of pancakes with or without berries, plus bacon, syrup, and coffee, tea, and juice.
