Woodbury Firefighter Steve Anctil lunges for the ladder in a practice bail-out drill from a building about to explode or collapse in the pretend exercise Saturday morning Feb 28th. Mr. Anctil crawled along the outside of the building to reach the ladder and a safe descent as members of the volunteer fire department engaged in the exercise at an unused structure. When a last-resort Mayday call or three blasts on a firetruck airhorn signal the ‘Get Out Now’ command, firefighters drop everything and hurl themselves from the scene. The rarely used signal is an immediate order. Sums up Deputy Fire Chief Dave Lampart in charge of the drill, “Better a broken bone than something a great deal worse.” When not engaged in fire or rescue, Mr. Anctil is a builder and Mr. Lampart is an executive with a FM radio station group.
