The Woodbury Volunteer Fire Dept hosts its yearly free Fishing Derby for children Saturday May 9th, 2026, at a stocked farm pond on Railtree Hill Road. Then on Sunday May 10th the annual Mother’s Day Pancake Breakfast will get underway at the fire department at 25 Quassuk Road. “We’ve had nearly 130 call-outs, including eight structure fires, since January 1st,” says Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan. “We look forward to relaxing with our neighbors on those two days – provided our firefighters can all be present and not needed for a response.”
Saturday’s signposted fishing derby for kids aged 13 and under runs from 8a to 11a. Fire Lt. Jason Hatstat is organizer of the annual event in honor of the late Fire Chief Mel Synder. The pond is stocked with at least three different kinds of trout: brook, brown, and rainbow. There are also prizes donated by local merchants, Hatstat said. Among the trophies are one for the biggest catch of the day and another for the most sportsmanlike youngster.
At the Mother’s Day breakfast Sunday, the time is 7am to 11am. There is a small fee, with an even smaller charge for children and senior citizens. Firefighters and families, their will cook and serve a pancake stack with or without berries as well as bacon and beverages. “Give mom a break and some good cheer. Come join us,” concludes Chief Morgan.
