For the fifth year in a row, Woodbury Fire Lt. Bill Hickey and his daughter Imogen flipped burgers at the Woodbury Fire Department’s annual carnival Labor Day weekend Sept 3rd though 5th. Mr. Hickey is a career firefighter in West Haven as well as a Woodbury resident. His daughter Imogen, age 20, is also a cashier at Ovens of France in town. “It’s a traditional daddy-daughter time for us,” says Mr. Hickey. “We really enjoy it.”
Woodbury Firefighters turned out in force to run the 2026 annual fund-raising event enjoyed by hundreds of visitors. Periodically firefighters dropped serving instruments and donned firefighting gear to respond to callouts. The last one dealt with a major oil spill on White Deer Rocks Road 1:20 am Sunday morning just hours after the Carnival closed with its dramatic fireworks display.
Among major lottery winners: Carolyn Kenworthy of Woodbury took home the Community Raffle Basket with $1,800 in donated gifts. Darlene McCohen, also of Woodbury, won the home heating oil award, Tim Phalon of Watertown will receive a $1,000 credit on his electric bill, and Elvina Rugovac from Woodbury took home the $1,000 grill donated by Aubuchon Hardware. Chuck Ballard and Julia Clair won the two prizes of dinner at the firehouse with a firetruck pickup for them and their families, a grand tour of the department, and ending with a full course meal prepared, cooked, and served by Woodbury volunteer firefighters.
