Woodbury Volunteer Firefighters welcome the public to the annual 9/11 memorial ceremony on Friday Sept 11th in Hollow Park at 08:45am. The commemorative event will take place a quarter-century after the terrorist attacks that killed 343 New York City Firefighters among the total estimated 3,000 dead. Woodbury lost six dead.
Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan and the department chaplain will lead the Woodbury firefighter contingent. Two flag bearers and a squad of military veterans from local American Legion Post 155 will present the colors as firefighters toll a fire bell in mournful tribute. Boy Scouts from Woodbury’s Troop 54 will be present.
Bishop Aldrich, a senior at Nonnewaug High School will sing the Star-Spangled Banner. The singer will be escorted by the Region 14 School Superintendent, the principal of NHS, and NHS’s music director. Paul Zulpa, Woodbury’s First Selectman, is scheduled to deliver a brief address. Local clergy will offer non-denominational prayers. The ceremony agenda ends with Former Fire Chief Bud Neal presenting a bouquet to families of those who lost a member in the attack.
The Fire Department of New York also prepared documentary videos to mark the event. The searing events of the two hijacked airliners deliberately crashing into upper floors of the World Trade Center towers and the subsequent tragedies are on YouTube.
