After a break of five years, Woodbury Firefighters again will offer a lottery prize of a ride on a firetruck to the department where firefighters will cook and serve a gourmet dinner of steak, chicken, or fish to the winner in the annual Carnival on Labor Day Weekend. “The carnival will be fun for everyone,” says Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan. ‘We’ve had a busy August, and we hope we’ll get to relax with our neighbors”
She cited the middle week of August as an example with eleven callouts that included three structure fire alarms, one dumpster fire, and a mix of emergencies that included motor vehicle accidents.
The carnival will run Thursday Sept 3rd through Saturday Sept 5th from 6 to 10pm in Hollow Park, 43 Hollow Road. Admission is free, and a single payment each evening covers all rides and sideshows from Rainbow Amusements of Newtown CT. Firefighters will cook and sell pulled pork, burgers, hotdogs, fries, corn-on-the-cob, and such longtime favorites as deep fat fried Oreo cookies.
The Woodbury Parks & Recreation Dept will sponsor a dramatic firework display from Pyrotecnico to close the event Saturday night starting at 9:15pm. The fireworks will immediately follow the lottery draw with several prizes including a thousand-dollar outdoor grill from Aubuchon Hardware in Woodbury.
Adds Chief Morgan, “The event doesn’t cost taxpayers anything, and any profit we make goes to equipment purchases. It’s really just a nice way to say hi to everyone, goodbye to summer and hello to the start of the school year.”
