WOODBURY April 30th, 2024– Woodbury Firefighters set the weekend of May 11th and 12th for the annual childrens fishing event on Saturday and the Mothers Day annual pancake breakfast on Sunday. “It’s all about the community and being neighbors,” says Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan. “It’s also a happy break for us after 75 call outs for fire and rescue so far this year.”
The free fishing derby for children aged 13 and under will last from 8am to 11am on the Saturday May 11th. The Mel Snyder Memorial Event, named in honor of a deceased fire chief, is at Kings Pond, Rail Tree Hill Road off Route 317. “We’ve stocked with plenty of fish so that everyone should catch at least one,“ says organizer Jason Hatstat, a Woodbury firefighter. “It will be fun for everyone.” The pond stock comprises brook, brown, and rainbow trout with possibly a large golden trout too, he said.
The fire department raffle prizes for the children will include fishing and camping gear donated by local businesses. In addition to the top prize for the largest catch, awards are made for the most motivated child and for good sportsmanship in honor of the late Darlene Start, a longtime supporter of the volunteer fire department.
The following day on Sunday May 12th is the annual Mothers Day pancake breakfast cooked and served by the volunteer firefighters at department headquarters, 25 Quassuk Rd. from 7am to 11am. Prices remain unchanged at $8 for adults or $6 for seniors and children. The traditional menu features juice, coffee or tea, stacks of pancakes with or without berries, and crisp bacon or sausage. “It’s a regular town event,” says Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan. “Lots of people come yearly with mom and the entire family. In the meantime, we’re always ready to help our neighbors in an emergency at any time of day or night. That’s what we do.”
