WOODBURY May 12, 2024 — Elise Sobolevski, age 9, caught the largest fish, a golden trout over 23 inches long,  at the free annual fishing event for children held by the Woodbury Volunteer Fire Dept on Saturday morning May 11th. “We had 43 kids fishing for more than a hundred trout stocked from four different species. It was great fun for the children, and we also had great prizes donated by local merchants,” says organizer and firefighter Jason Hatstat.  He posted the list of local donors at the fishing derby held under a sunny blue sky at a local farm pond. The event is named for the late Mel Snyder, a former chief who was a devoted fisherman and liked educating children about the sport. “We do this because we are all neighbors in this community and it’s a nice break for us from fire and rescue operations,” said Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan. So far this year, Woodbury’s firefighters have responded to more than 75 call-outs, she said.
